Give Blood 4 Good is a Scottish-based awareness charity set up in 2019 in memory of Patrick Smith.

Patrick was extremely passionate about blood donation, so much so that he gave blood as soon as he was able to, on his 17th birthday. Every time Patrick donated since, he would advocate for how important it was to do and would encourage his friends and family members to give blood at every opportunity he had.

Following a blood drive held in his honour, where over 150 people donated blood, we realised that 60% of people who took part had never given blood before, most of whom were young adults and had no intentions to in future. From further research, we found an NHS statistic where 81% of 18-24 year olds in the UK have never donated blood, with 35% of this age group admitting they were scared.

It is clear that education surrounding blood donation needs improving, so that more people make giving blood a regular part of their lives. Give Blood 4 Good was set up to do exactly that; we’re determined to encourage as many young adults across the UK to donate blood as we can, to ensure that everyone who needs a blood transfusion can receive one while leaving behind a bright legacy in Patrick’s memory.

Our Values

RESPECT

We endeavour to create an inclusive environment where everyone who would like to learn more about blood donation feels welcome, as well as show compassion for every person’s experience and perspective.

SUPPORT

We embrace people who have been impacted by blood donations directly and support people on their blood donation journey, ensuring everyone is celebrated for demonstrating a powerful act of kindness.

EMPOWER

We strive to be a source of inspiration for blood donors, through telling their stories and sharing facts about the process (as well as the occasional meme!), empowering people to continue giving blood until they’re no longer able.

IMPACT

We are committed to making a meaningful difference to society through supporting the NHS to ensure that everyone who needs a blood transfusion can receive one. We’re determined to encourage as many young adults across the UK to donate blood as we can, all while leaving behind a bright legacy in Patrick’s memory.

Meet the Give Blood 4 Good team!

Hanna Smith

Co-Founder

"It was important for me to channel positive action after the loss of my brother as he deserves to leave a bright legacy behind. It's exciting to see how many people have been keen to get involved especially when it's not something they'd thought to do before. He's continuing to inspire so many which I'm really proud of."

Martha Greenbank

Co-Founder

"What I love about GB4G is that we are creating a platform for celebration of donors, giving up their time (and blood!) and saving lives in the process - just a whole lotta good vibes!"

Megan Petursdottir

Communications and Engagement Officer

“I love working with Give Blood 4 Good as educating and informing people about blood donation is crucial in both saving and improving lives all over the world. I am even more grateful to be able to do something to honour Patrick, where we have the opportunity to make a difference whilst also making him proud.”

Leigh McLevy

Compliance Officer

“I have always been passionate about blood donation as my mum and dad are both life-long blood donors. Patrick dragged me along with him to donate at university and I know I will always be a regular donor to continue his legacy. Being able to help and inspire others to do the same and saves lives is such a wonderful thing to be a part of.”

Meet our Trustees

Gavin Smith

“As someone who has regularly given blood, I was surprised by how little I knew about both the journey of donated blood and the work involved in educating what is still a large proportion of the public who do not currently contribute. The potential for GB4G’s endeavours is staggering and it is exciting to join a young, dynamic team which has such energy and enthusiasm. Their early successes offer a flavour of what can be achieved in the longer term and I look forward to offering what I can to complement their existing skillset.”

Stewart McGuffie

“The team at GB4G have done an amazing job getting this set up and generating such a high level of interest - they will get whatever support I can give. I had not given blood for 30 years until this initiative and have now become a regular… if this campaign can help to catch regular donors at a younger age it will be to all our benefit. My nephew Patrick would be hugely proud of what they have created in his memory - I remember laughing a little at his obsession with giving blood, but the facts that GB4G have unearthed have proved he was so right!”

Paul Bisland

“Through the education lens, I could immediately see how my strengths would marry with the needs of GB4G, and that the long term aims of the group would involve working with young adults before they can donate blood in order to normalise the process. I am looking forward to helping GB4G expand their work with schools as a way of democratising the super-curriculum and bringing pre-university preparation to the widest audience, and I can see various ways in which GB4G could be at the forefront of providing opportunities for aspiring medics which would advance the groups aims by creating young, and hopefully life-long, advocates for blood donation.”
