Hayley’s Donation Story
Hayley, tell us about the experiences you have had when giving blood?
“I have given blood twice now and both times I found the process very straightforward and easy to complete. When you arrive, you fill out a couple of forms about yourself and have a quick chat with the nurse to ensure you are eligible to give blood. You are then taken through to the area where you give your life saving donation. The whole process is fairly quick. My first donation took about 45 minutes and my second about 25 minutes; the donation itself is over in less than 15 minutes.
The nurses are all very friendly and make you feel comfortable and at ease throughout the whole process. Once you have completed your donation, you are free to leave and are encouraged to grab a juice and a choc biccy (the best bit!). The second time you even get a badge with your blood group on it!”
What is the best part about giving blood?
“What I love about giving blood is knowing that you are helping someone in need. I would encourage anyone who is able to give blood to do so. I don’t feel any different physically after donating; however, knowing that you are helping someone in need makes you feel so good.”
When you first gave blood, what were you most worried about? How did you get past this?
“When I first gave blood, I was worried about the needle: was it going to hurt? Was I going to feel faint? In my experience, nothing hurts when giving blood. The nurses constantly reassure you and chat away, so sometimes you forget that you are donating. I think going as part of a blood drive or with people you know definitely helps put you at ease for your first donation.”
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, what steps have the donation centre put in place to make you feel safe?
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, the blood centre has taken precautions to ensure everyone is safe. You are told to arrive no more than 10 minutes before your appointment, wash your hands for 20 seconds on arrival and then sit two meters apart from anyone else that is there. The blood stations are all two meters apart as well so you are not coming into contact with anyone other than the nurse.”
What would you say to those who are scared to donate blood to put them at ease?
“I would encourage anyone to donate blood as it is an easy and rewarding process. I can’t believe I hadn’t started it sooner and would tell everyone to go and donate if they are able. Even if you are unsure, you can still go and try! #SaveALife”
